Diamond Rib Scarf © Jacqui Cunningham 2003
Materials: I used a really stunning rayon yarn for this project. It is made by an Australian company and called Sullivans Royal 3ply – colour “Old Gold”. I found it a bit different to work with at first being used to finer cotton, but soon got the hang of it. The result was quite gorgeous and slinky, great for evening wear. I used a 1.25mm hook. For a beaded fringe, thread at least 180 small beads after the scarf is finished off. You should have a few left over but better too many than too few.
Chain 47 to begin. 1st row: 4dc in 5th ch from hook. *Ch9, skip 9ch, 4dc in next ch. Rpt from * 3 more times. Skip 1ch. Dc in next (last) chain. Ch3, turn. 2nd row: Work 4dc in centre of 1st 4dc group (between 2nd and 3rd dc). *Ch9, skip 9ch. 4dc in centre of next dc group. Rpt from * 3 times. 1dc in top of turning chain. Ch3, turn. 3rd and 4th Row: Repeat row 2 twice. 5th row: 4dc in centre of dc group. *Ch4, insert hook under the 3 ch9 loops below and work a sc to catch them together. Ch4, 4dc in centre of next dc group. Rpt from * 3 times. Dc in top of turning chain. Rows 2 to 5 make up pattern. Repeat these four rows until length desired. I did 63 repeats in total, but for a longer scarf keep going, bearing in mind you may need to go to a third ball of yarn. Last Row: Ch3 to turn, 4dc in centre of 1st dc group. *Ch6, 4dc in centre of next dc group. Rpt from * to end. Dc in turning chain. Fasten off.
Fringe Thread beads in any colour sequence that you like, knowing that beads will be joined in clusters of 4. I used a sequence of gold-black-black-gold, which resulted in two gold beads at the top and two black at the bottom. 1st row: Join thread in 1st stitch on end of scarf. Ch1, sc in each st and chain across. Turn. 2nd row: *Ch30, pull 4 beads up to hook. Work a chain around these beads. Turn, skip 1st 2ch from hook. Slip st back through remaining 29 chain. Sl st in next 2 sc on scarf. Ch20. Ch around 4 beads. Turn, skip first 2ch from hook. Sl st back thru 19ch. Sl st into next 2sc on scarf. Repeat from * across end of scarf alternating between 30 and 20 chain lengths so that the beads are staggered. Fasten off and darn in all ends.
