Hanging Hand Towel © Jacqui Cunningham 2003
If you can find a really pretty hand towel to add this topper to, it would make a nice Mothers Day gift. I used No 10 crochet cotton and a size 1.50mm hook. DMC Perle 8 was used for the rose and edging. The first row of single chain is worked directly into the towel. This is the toughest row. The rest is all plain sailing. The stitches should be worked fairly close together as the towel should not be gathered at this stage. The number of stitches will vary with the width of the towel, but for 3rd row to work, it must be a multiple of 5 plus 1. My towel (pictured) was worked with 81sc in the 1st row, hence I have given the instructions as follows:-
Row 1: 81 sc directly into towel, ch2, turn. Row 2: Sc in each sc across. Ch4, turn. Row 3: Skip 1st sc, (the one you worked ch4 out of) and next sc. Yarn over insert hook into next sc and pull up a loop, yarn over insert hook into same sc and pull up a loop. Yarn over, insert hook into next sc and pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook into same sc again and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook. (puff stitch made over 2sc). Ch1, skip 1sc, dc in next sc. Ch1, skip 1sc, puff stitch over next 2 sc. Ch1, skip 1sc, dc in next sc. Repeat from * to end. Ch2, turn. Row 4: sc in next space, sc in top of puff st, sc in next space, sc in next dc, sc in next space, sc in next puff st, and so on to the end of the row. (total 64sc including turning ch). Ch3, turn Row 5: Dc in each sc across. (64dc) Row 6: *Sc decrease over next 2dc, sc in next dc. Repeat to end of row. Ch3, turn. Row 7: Dc in each sc across (43dc) ch2, turn Row 8: Repeat row 6. Row 9: Dc in each sc across (30dc) ch2, turn. Row 10: Repeat row 6. Row 11: Dc in each sc across (20dc). Ch2, turn. Row 12: Repeat row 6. Row 13: Dc in each sc across (13dc). Ch2, turn Row 14: Repeat row 6. Row 15: Dc in each sc across (9dc). Ch2, turn. Rows 16 to 28: Dc in each dc across. Ch3, turn. Row 29: Dc in next 2 dc, ch2, skip 3dc, dc in next 3dc. Ch3, turn.
Row 30: Dc in next 2 dc, 3dc in space, dc in next 3 dc. Ch3, turn. Row 31: Dc in each dc. Ch3, turn Row 32: 2dc in next 7 dc. Dc in turning chain. Ch3, turn. Row 33: Dc in next dc, *2dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * to end. (22dc) Turn Row 34: Ch1, sc in same dc. Ch2, skip 1dc, sc in next dc. (11 ch2 loops). Ch1, turn. Row 35: (sc, 2dc, sc) in each ch2 loop across. Fasten off. Using pink cotton, work sc all around outside edge of topper. Fasten off and darn in ends.
Rose Using pink :- Ch 7, join with slip st to form a ring. Rnd 1: ch1, 18 sc in ring. Join with a sl st in 1 loop only (front loop) of 1st sc. Rnd 2: Ch7, sl st in front loop only of next sc. Repeat around, joining last 7ch loop (18th) with a sl st in the back loop of 1st sc. Rnd 3: Ch1, sc in same loop. *Ch5, skip 2sc, sc in back loop of next sc. Rpt around. Join with a sl st in 1st sc. (6 loops) Rnd 4: In each 5ch loop around work sc, hdc, 5dc, hdc, sc. To join, sl st around the post of 1st sc in round 3 below. Rnd 5: Working behind the petals made in last round, ch6, sl st around post of next sc of round below. Repeat around. Sl st to join. Ch1. Rnd 6: In each 6ch loop, work sc, hdc, 3dc, trc, 3dc, hdc, sc. Slip stitch to join and fasten off. To make up: With wrong side of towel facing, sew rose to strap so that ring in centre of rose is positioned directly over the button hole. With right side of towel facing, sew a small button to the strap in centre of the 16th row or thereabouts. Button can then fasten through the buttonhole and the centre of the rose when looped over a towel rail.
