SQUARE MOTIF for DOILY OR RUNNER

Materials:  Size 40 crochet cotton and a 0.6mm hook makes a square 2 inches or 5cm across.  The sample shown is made up of four squares and one centre motif.  Make as many as you like and join together for a larger doily or runner.

 

Special stitch instructions:

 

Trc Cluster:  Yo hook twice, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop.  (Yo and pull through two loops on hook) twice.  Yo hook twice, insert into next stitch and pull up a loop.  (Yo and pull through two loops on hook) twice.  Yo and pull through all three loops on hook.

 

Picot:  Ch4, sl st in top of  trc just made.

 

 

 

 

Rnd  1:  Ch2, work 8 sc in 2nd chain from hook.  Sl st to join in 1st sc.

 

Rnd  2:  Ch1,  2sc in same st as join.  2sc in each of next 7sc.  Sl st to join in 1st sc.  (16sc)

 

Rnd  3:  Ch1, 1sc in same st as join.  (ch6, skip 3sc, sc in next sc) 3 times.  Ch6, sl st to join in 1st sc of round.

 

Rnd  4:  Ch1 to start.  Work 7sc in each 6ch loop around.  Sl st to join in 1st sc.

 

Rnd  5:  Sl st into next sc.  (This is the 2nd sc of 1st 7sc loop).  Ch4, trc in next sc.  Ch4, skip 1 sc, trc in next 2 sc.  Ch4, work trc cluster over next 2 sc.  (This is the last sc of this loop and the 1st sc of next loop).

*Ch4, trc in next 2 sc.  Ch4, skip 1sc, trc in next 2 sc.  Ch4, trc cluster over next 2 sc.

Repeat from *twice more.  Ch4, sl st to join in top of beginning ch4.

 

Rnd  6:  Sl st into next trc and ch4 space.  Ch4 to count as 1st trc.  Trc in same space.  *(Ch3, 2trc) in same space again.  Ch4, skip 2trc, 3trc in next space.  1trc in tip of cluster, 3trc in next space**

ch4, skip 2trc,  2trc in next space.  Rpt from * around ending last rpt at **.  Ch4, slip st to join in top of beginning ch4.

 

Rnd  7:  Sl st to 1st 3ch space.  Ch4 (to count as 1st trc.  (2trc, ch3, 3trc) in same space.  *ch4, sc in each of next 7 trc.  Ch4**. (3trc, ch3, 3trc) in next corner space.  Rpt from * twice and then from * to ** once.  Sl st to join in top of beginning ch4.

 

Rnd  8:  Ch4 to count as 1st trc.  Trc in next 2 trc.  Ch4, slip st in top of last trc just made for a picot. *(3trc, ch3, 3trc) in corner space.  Trc in next trc, picot.  Trc in next 2 trc.  Ch6.  Trc in next 7 sc working off together as for a cluster.  Ch4, slip st in tip of cluster for a picot.  Ch6, trc in next 3 trc, picot.  Repeat from * around ending last repeat after cluster with picot, ch6, sl st to join in top of beginning ch 4.

 

Fasten off.

2nd square:

 

Work rounds 1 – 7 as for 1st square.

 

 

Rnd  8:  Ch4 to count as 1st trc.  Trc in next 2 rc.  Ch4 picot.  (3trc, ch3, 3trc) in corner space.  Trc in next trc.  Ch2, then with wrong sides of both squares together, sl st in corresponding picot on 1st square.  Ch2, sl st in top of last trc made on 2nd square.  Trc in next 2 trc.  Ch6, 7trc worked off together over next 7sc.  Ch2, sl st in corresponding picot on 1st square.  Ch2, sl st in top of cluster.  Ch6, trc in next 3 trc.  Ch2, join as before to 1st square.  Continue around without further joining but working picots in usual way.

 

Further squares are worked in the same way joining on two sides when needed.

 

Fill in motif:

 

Work rounds 1 – 3 of square.

 

Rnd 4:  Ch1, 7sc in 1st loop.  Ch1, sl st in corner loop of a square, ch1, *7sc in next 6ch loop.  Ch1, sl st in corner of next square to left of last join.  Ch1.  Rpt around.  Sl st to join in 1st sc.

 

Fasten off
